Create Sharper Contrast With PPT VISION’s Image Math Tool

Getting better contrast can be a challenge for certain machine vision applications. Of course, lighting and optics is always the best place to start, but this will take you only so far.
Below is an image of a meat patty with some very slight discoloration. Any vision system would have issues discerning these discolorations compared to the other areas of the patty.

IMPACT software allows users to perform image math operations such as subtract, add, OR, and XOR to images to create an output image for easier contrast analysis.

The Math Tool calculates the difference between the Green and the Blue images that are available as color image properties within the tool. The Output image is available for further analysis within the vision program task.

The image below, from the Blob tool’s output, clearly shows the discoloration areas on the meat patty which can be used for further analysis.
