Smarter Programming: ROI's Regions of Interest

The Power of Flexible ROIs for Solving Vision Applications

Every machine vision software uses areas where the actual image processing is performed. At PPT VISION we call these ROIs or Regions of Interest.

Common ROIs are rectangular or circular shapes placed in the image, sometimes using a reference point to be sure that the ROI is placed on the correct position of the part to be inspected.

But what if your product does not have a rectangular or circular shape? How can you perform an inspection on an odd-shaped part, for example a frozen Wiener Schnitzel?

PPT VISION’s IMPACT software has a broad variety of different ROI shapes. Rectangles, polygons, and circles in any size are available. You can also place the ROIs  in an array or even create holes in them.

But what about the odd shape of the Wiener Schnitzel? If you would like to perform a surface inspection on an unusually shaped product, you can use a Blob tool to find the odd shaped product and then use the shape of the blob as a new inspection region. This means that the ROI can change with every new product, making it very flexible for a multi-product line.

In the images below, a demonstration is shown of how a Blob tool finds the Schnitzel and then uses that shape in the Color Checker tool to perform the inspection.

PPT VISION's IMPACT software uses different types of data for all the ROIs and all data from the ROIs can be read and transferred to other tools.  This newly created data can be used to program and create new ROIs.

Example: a Line gauge tool measures the dimension of a part and the Length and Width of the part obtained from it can be used to create a new Rectangle ROI ---making it flexible for parts that are not always the same size.

Do you want to learn more about these innovative ways of inspecting parts? Ask your PPT VISION contact person or download our software for free at www.pptvision.com.
